No dia 25 de maio, realizámos um showcase nacional no âmbito do “Skills for the Future”, programa que resulta de uma parceria entre a EIT Manufacturing e a Junior Achievement Portugal. A iniciativa procura o desenvolvimento de soluções inovadoras com recurso a princípios da economia circular, tendo em vista a produção mais sustentável de utensílios ou a conceção de serviços que impactem positivamente a comunidade. Este ano, 163 equipas que participaram no programa A Empresa desenvolveram projetos enquadrados neste âmbito.
O showcase contou com a participação de 8 equipas, de 7 escolas. A equipa "CUPFULUP", do Colégio Marista de Carcavelos garantiu o 1.º lugar. A “AlgAlastic”, da Escola Secundária da Ramada e a “ColicCup”, do Instituto de Ciências Educativas, garantiram o 2.º e 3.º lugar, respetivamente.

Na 3.º edição do Digital Innovation Challenge by Banco BPI, que decorreu de 15 a 19 de maio, 28 alunos do ensino secundário, de 5 escolas do país, trabalharam, em equipa, com o apoio dos seus mentores para desenvolver uma solução para o desafio lançado de estruturar a oferta de financiamento na construção de novos formatos de habitação para jovens. No evento final, depois de desenvolvidas as soluções com o apoio dos seus mentores do Banco BPI, as equipas apresentaram as suas soluções, em pitch, a um painel de jurados. A ideia vencedora foi a da Equipa "BPI ViveJovem", do Colégio Guadalupe, ao oferecer um serviço de apoio aos municípios para construção de habitações co-living até aos 35 anos. A equipa "Loocu", do Colégio Rainha D. Leonor e a equipa "BPI Living", do Colégio de Gaia, receberam o 2.º e 3.º prémio, respetivamente.
Voltámos a realizar dois pequenos-almoços muito especiais no âmbito da iniciativa Breakfast of Leaders by Banco BPI. O Dr. José Pena do Amaral, Membro da Comissão de Responsabilidade Social do Banco BPI, o Dr. Artur Santos Silva, Presidente Honorário do Banco BPI e Curador da Fundação “la Caixa” e Gonçalo Duque, CEO da JAP, sentaram-se à mesa com 6 alunos do ensino básico, secundário e universitário, e partilharam experiências sobre o seu percurso profissional, dando várias dicas para inspirar o futuro dos alunos.
Além das duas iniciativas, 9 voluntários do Banco deram mentoria, num conjunto de 3 sessões, a algumas equipas do programa A Empresa que passaram à Competição Nacional.

A 2.ª edição de 22/23 da iniciativa Braço Direito decorreu de 22 a 26 de maio. Mais de 170 alunos do ensino secundário tiveram a oportunidade única de ficarem a conhecer melhor o mundo do trabalho. Como? Simples - acompanhando, durante um dia, um voluntário das nossas empresas associadas e parceiras no seu local de trabalho e ficando a conhecer as diferentes tarefas e responsabilidades do seu cargo.
A iniciativa é uma mais-valia na orientação vocacional dos jovens, permitindo-lhes “espreitar” o seu futuro profissional e perceber melhor que opções de carreira podem seguir.
Participaram nesta 2.ª edição, 22 empresas associadas e parceiras da JAP.

27 alunos da Escola Secundária Isidoro de Sousa foram desafiados, no dia 23 de março, a desenhar negócios inovadores para melhorar a qualidade de vida do Município de Viana do Alentejo, em apenas 8 horas. “Think global, Act local” foi o lema do Innovation Challenge realizado em parceria com o CLDS de Viana do Alentejo – tudo o que realizamos na nossa comunidade pode impactar não só o que nos rodeia, mas sim toda a sociedade global.
Durante a manhã os alunos contaram com o apoio de 8 mentores, representantes do tecido empresarial do município, para trabalharem as suas ideias. No final do dia, todos apresentaram as suas ideias em pitch perante um júri.
A equipa “Alansport” foi a grande vencedora do desafio ao idealizar um complexo desportivo que promove hábitos de vida saudável e que integra uma loja de equipamento desportivo.
As equipas “GERAAÇÃO” e “Clube Náutico de Viana do Alentejo”, ficaram em 2.º e 3.º lugar respetivamente.

A 1 de março juntámo-nos à Câmara Municipal do Porto na Qualifica - Feira de Educação, Formação, Juventude e Emprego, que decorreu na Exponor, onde realizámos, em conjunto, a 7ª edição da Feira Porto de Futuro!
Oito miniempresas do ensino secundário, de 3 escolas do município do Porto, apresentaram as suas ideias de negócio em formato de competição (exibição em stand e pitch) e foram avaliadas por um júri. Os projetos foram desenvolvidos durante a sua participação no programa A Empresa, este ano letivo.
A “Smart Future”, da Escola Secundária Filipa de Vilhena, foi a grande vencedora do dia ao desenvolver uma capa inovadora para maços de tabaco que permite depositar as beatas, de forma a reduzir o impacto ambiental negativo causado pelo abandono de beatas de cigarros nos espaços públicos.
Participaram também neste evento, a Escola Secundária Clara de Resende, a Escola Secundária Filipa de Vilhena e a Escola Secundária Rodrigues de Freitas. A Feira contou, ainda, com a presença de Fernando Paulo, Vereador do Pelouro da Educação e da Coesão Social da Câmara do Porto.

O "Model Nation Award" reconhece as organizações nacionais da JA que atuam nos mais altos padrões de qualidade durante o último ano de referência, atingindo ou superando os benchmarks para um mínimo de 80% dos KPIs da JA Europe, que são estabelecidos com essa finalidade.

According to the World Bank, the blue economy can be defined as the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems. However, there is increasing evidence that losses in the oceans’ natural capital resulting from unsustainable economic activity are eroding the resource base on which such growth depends.
To enhance blue education and improve the environmental sustainability of the coastal communities in which it operates, Euronext is supporting mini-companies that best embody a sustainable use of the ocean resources for economic growth through the “Blue Innovation Award”. This year, the award gave student companies from Belgium, France Ireland, Norway, Portugal, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom the chance to join an international competition, and to develop and present innovative business ideas related to the blue economy.

The Covid-19 pandemic affected not only the format of the 3rd peer-learning workshop in Entrepreneurship Education, organised in a fully virtual format on 10 March, but also the content of the discussions amongst the 65 experts present. During three plenary sessions and two sets of breakout sessions, participants representing 25 countries took stock of the overall progress in entrepreneurship education in Europe and strategies to speed up further uptake across education systems.

The Main Jury picked the Start Up AID4ALL as the winner of the “JA Europe Enterprise of the Year” Award. The students from Cyprus set up a business to find solutions for people with disabilities, offering a product that aims at compensating hearing loss with the sense of touch. Team MIZED from Portugal making customised protections for athletes was awarded 2nd place in the European competition, while team Stiles from Malta producing environmentally sustainable décor tiles won the 3rd place.

Students from France, Germany, Hungary and UK pitched their innovative solutions to reduce waste and the depletion of natural resources in an online competition organised by JA Europe and Arconic Foundation.
The judging criteria included problem solving and innovation in the area of recycling and reusing of materials, defining the type and size of the intended market and a high-quality prototype of the recycled or reused final product.

Today at the first ever virtual Sci-Tech Challenge, a number of innovative solutions were presented to showcase the use of STEM skills in solving a real-life challenge. Two teams of students, from Belgium and Romania, showcased their solution for an energy-efficient and low-emission mobility system for the city winning bid of the 2040 Olympic Games. An audience including Dr. Walter Goetz, Head of Cabinet of European Commissioner for Transport Adina Valean; Philippe Ducom, President ExxonMobil Europe; Karel Lannoo, Chief Executive of CEPS; as well as students and teachers from across Europe discussed how to upscale STEM education and make it more attractive to young people.

The Company of the Year Competition is the flagship event of JA Europe that empowers students aged 15-18 to run a mini-company from top to bottom. It fosters their entrepreneurial skills, giving them the opportunity to design a business concept and apply it in real life.

Students from the Louis Armand high school in Eaubonne, close to Paris, presented a “Revolutionary transportation system” to tackle traffic disruption, congestion and pollution during the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA. The project included a very comprehensive transportation plan combining a sky train network, solar panels and autonomous buses.
Their innovative idea was awarded the first prize by an international jury of experts at the European Business Summit on 6 and 7 of May in Brussels, in the context of the European final event of “Inventing the Future", an initiative of JA Europe and the Arconic Foundation, focused on entrepreneurship and STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). The other three finalists in the competition included teams from Germany, Hungary and the UK.

Award will recognise innovative use of digital technology to develop a start-up business
The Junior Achievement (JA) Europe Enterprise Challenge (EEC) is JA Europe’s annual celebration of the achievements of its Start-Up programme students and their businesses across Europe. The Start-Up Programme annually engages over 14,000 University students from 300 schools, providing entrants with an opportunity to develop and run a business within a safe environment and under the guidance of business mentors. This year’s European competition final, showcasing the best start-ups from each country, will take place in Oslo, Norway, on 24-25 June.

For three years in a row, students from northern European countries took part in the project “Central Baltic Student Enterprises without Borders” (CBEwB), attending various conferences, camps and fairs to get an idea of the international business environment. 55 educational institutions, 480 students, 79 international joint ventures and hundreds of new, useful contacts - this is the balance of this international event!

Junior Achievement (JA) Europe today announced that Adam Warby, CEO of Avanade, Inc. has been selected as JA Europe’s new Chairman of its Board of Directors. Warby will take over from Accenture COO, Jo Deblaere, who has been in the role for the last six years. Orange, a student-company from St Aloysius College, has won the Excellence in IT Award at the Junior Achievement (JA) Europe 26th annual Company of the Year competition in Berlin.

Out of some 15,000 university students enrolled this year in the JA Start Up Programme, BIOFY, a Spanish startup won the European Enterprise Challenge Award 2018 during JA Europe Enterprise Challenge after winning the national final of the JA Start Up Programme in Spain.

The Global Final of the Social Innovation Relay took place online on 19 June 2018. • The 9th European final of the Sci-Tech Challenge, organised by JA Europe and ExxonMobil, took place on 17 May 2018 in Brussels. This year’s theme was logistics, more specifically building a European supply chain taking into account the environmental impact.
• Among the five teams (international teams from Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and Romania), the winning team was identified during an award ceremony held at the Solvay Library in Brussels.
• The team developed a highly-innovative approach to transportation networks for supplying food, clothing and furniture by using renewable energy such as hybrid trains and trucks using biofuels; solar panel and wind turbines.

The American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union (AmCham EU) and Junior Achievement Europe (JA Europe) are delighted to announce that Bioo, a Spanish start-up, is the winner of the sixth AmCham EU Youth Entrepreneurship Award. Bioo created a unique tool to generate electricity from plants in a sustainable way. Participants of the European Entrepreneurship Education Summit also came to see the students in action, both events being held simultaneously in Brussels, seat of the European Institutions.

JA Europe and the Citi Foundation are celebrating 30 years of partnership with the renewal of a grant to work together in 19 European countries across Europe. Early this year, the Citi Foundation expanded their Pathways to Progress initiative globally with a $100million commitment to support 500,000 young people over the next three years to become career ready. AmCham EU and JA Europe are pleased to announce that COOL4SEA, a Danish start-up, is the winner of the 2015 AmCham EU Youth Entrepreneurship Award. COOL4SEA, founded by JA alumni, has developed innovative technology to harness energy from heat on-board ships so it can be used for cooling, resulting in impressive environmental and economic benefits for the shipping industry. The jury was impressed not only with the innovative concept, but with the significant technical and engineering skills required to develop such technology. Organized in collaboration with JA Europe, the award aims to showcase young people with entrepreneurial talent.

SoberDrive, a United Kingdom group, won big at the JA Europe Skills for the Future competition in Prague on June 10 with an invention that would revolutionize drunk driving self-regulation. The student group of George Kershaw Houghton, Edward Kershaw Houghton, Callum Coles, Samuel Roberts and Lauren Palmer, were chosen for their concept of a socially responsible company and assisting in decreasing the number of drunk driving related incidents.

Obtaining a new Entrepreneurial Skills Pass (ESP) proves that a student has strong entrepreneurial skills and business acumen. A unique international qualification is launched today aiming to give students access to further opportunities and facilitate their transition from education to entrepreneurship or employment. The Entrepreneurial Skills Pass (ESP) runs in 26 countries* and certifies students (aged 15-19) who have had a practical entrepreneurship experience and have gained the necessary knowledge, skills and competences to start a business or be successfully employed.

Students from Estonian company 3 Little Pigs, have today won the title of the Young Enterprise and Junior Achievement Europe (JA-YE) European Company of the Year 2013 after the UK hosted the final at Wembley, UK. Their company offers science shows to children aged 6-12. The hands-on experiments are available for private parties (birthdays and other events), schools and kindergartens and they have performed to over 1000 students.

University ‘Start Up Programme’ students from Denmark win top honours at the 2015 JA Europe Enterprise Challenge. Competing against 23 other companies from 16 European countries, Gas2Green won the overall award for best enterprise, additionally winning the ‘Hyundai Brilliant Young Entrepreneurs Award’. The team was chosen based on their innovative idea and strong business potential, which offers a solution to an increasing problem in the maritime sector, where the ships discharge waste material into the oceans. The team’s solution will recycle this unused waste material, by using renewable energy to power an electrolysis cell and produce hydrogen or biofuels.

Across Europe this academic year, fifteen countries will run the JAYE Europe – Hyundai Skills for the Future programme 2014-2015. That represents a 300% increase in the number of countries participating since Hyundai Motor Europe started its collaboration with JAYE Europe in 2012. Inspired by the impact of the initiative on young students, schools in seven new countries will integrate the programme into their academic activities this school year 2014-2015. These are Denmark, Norway, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, the Netherlands, and Austria.

Young social entrepreneurs from the team ‘Auxilium’ in Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) won the 2015 ‘Best Social Enterprise Award’ based on their social enterprise concept. The team started running a canteen in the centre of Skopje, which provides warm meals for homeless individuals 12 hours a day. By receiving donations from local markets and bakeries the students are able to give back, while supporting their local community.

Over the next two years a research project led by JA Europe, will test the impact of 50% penetration of entrepreneurship education among students (aged 15-20) in 5 countries across Europe. Students from 20 schools in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Italy and Latvia, will participate in the ‘mini-company’ programme and gain a practical entrepreneurship experience. Using control groups and quantitative and qualitative research methods, the Innovation Cluster for Entrepreneurship Education (ICEE) project will analyse student learning outcomes and societal impact.

It has become almost commonplace to cite daunting statistics about the sustained level of youth unemployment in the EU, with some countries having as much as 25 percent of their youth out of work. We have gotten used to those statistics and these figures no longer make media headlines. This gives us a sense of false hope that the problem has been solved, or is being solved at the moment. No, it is not.
