New cooperation to empower European youth

04 January 2023

JA Europe is pleased to announce that we are renewing our collaboration with UPS Europe and The UPS Foundation. Thanks to this partnership UPS employees will empower the next generation of Europeans through volunteering. Our collaboration is set in the context of the European Year of Youth in 2022 and the European Year of Skills in 2023. UPS also recognizes the urgent need to support Ukrainian children and youth with concrete opportunities to build their future and make sure their educational path is not disrupted.

The collaboration between UPS and JA Europe started in January 2022 and is designed to support young students and refugees and enable them to access education opportunities. With support from UPS volunteers, the initiative aims to increase youth interest in the logistics business, their awareness of UPS commitment to sustainable development, women empowerment and support for small and medium businesses, as well as better prepare the next generations to access the labour market.

In 2022, UPS volunteers mentored students in Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. In 2023, Turkish students will also benefit from this partnership. Specific resources have been made available to the UPS volunteers from different departments to facilitate their interaction with JA students and alumni.

In addition to the employee engagement, UPS is also supporting the creation and development of the first pan-European Virtual Career Hub providing young people a transition to employment. UPS has also provided logistics support for the delivery of 1,300 laptops for Ukranian students.

At the 2022 JA Europe Annual General Assembly on 28 September, the President of UPS Europe Daniel Carrera joined JA Europe’s Board of Directors. Mr. Carrera commented on his appointment to the JA Europe Board: “At UPS, a spirit of entrepreneurship drives innovation, and we know it’s a strong driver of economic growth and a force for creating equity. We’ve partnered with JA Europe so that UPSers can use their skills to empower the next generation of European entrepreneurs and leaders. We will also introduce young people to the logistics industry and its range of career opportunities. As a member of the board, I look forward to working with JA to help inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.”

Salvatore Nigro, CEO JA Europe, said: “Our partnership with UPS is built upon employee engagement to directly interact and empower the next generation in the countries of the initiative, and I’m convinced that this model is a win-win for both UPS employees and the JA students. The best learning experiences happen when business volunteers bring their expertise and knowledge to the students who are given an opportunity to apply the skills in a real-life context.
