AmCham EU Youth Entrepreneurship Award 2018: online finale selects top 3, winner to be announced on 16 May

Brussels, Belgium, 05 April 2018

Each year, thousands of JA alumni enter Europe’s economy as potential entrepreneurs. This year, some 37 young people who have participated in a JA programme, have made it past the initial start-up phase and have a business concept with strong growth potential, applied for the award.

 

The online finale took place on 5 April, in the presence of a high level jury panel, composed by:

  • Daniel Calleja-Crespo, Director-General at the European Commission
  • Susan Danger, CEO, AmCham EU
  • Rudolf Ertl, Senior Vice President Commercial Operations EMEA from Gilead
  • Benjamin Fox, Journalist at Euractiv
  • Mark Green, President EMEA for AES
  • Adam Shub, Chargé d’Affaires, US Mission to the EU

The jury selected the top 3 to be invited to AmCham EU’s annual Gala on 16 May in Brussels, with high-level stakeholders and AmCham EU members as guests. These young people will be given the opportunity to tell the audience about their business and future plans, to meet with AmCham EU executive committee members and network with the audience. The gala will also be the culminating point of the award, when the winning team will be announced and receive a public recognition of their work . This is in addition to a cash prize of €10,000 and several hours of mentorship over a 12-month period from a number of ExCo members who will coach, encourage and offer their time, expertise and advice.

Bioo

Entrepreneur: Pablo M. Vidarte

Bioo focuses on the development, design and sale of its products based on its technology. The technical department is responsible for R&D, design and prototyping for further large-scale production.

The design of the products is developed after a commercial and economic viability analysis. Their production is carried out by external collaborators and supervised from Bioo. The sales model is based on a network of global franchisees that are controlled centrally. This model has official and/or exclusive distributors by countries or regions according to products; except in Spain, where it operates independently.

Grow Green

Entrepreneur: Irene Andreou

Country of origin: Cyprus

GrowGreen are a Junior Achievement company creating the tools to grow green by offering a biodegradable flower pot called the GreenBox.  

The GreenBox is an environmentally-friendly flower pot that uses coffee waste and simultaneously replaces conventional plastic pots. Instead of ending up in land fields, coffee waste becomes a valuable ingredient, and a very beneficial one for the soil and plant. Their vision is to introduce a high-quality product that respects the environment by having a near-zero carbon footprint.

Liight

Entrepreneurs: Santiago Jimenez Cortes and Carlos Rosety Alonso

Country of origin: Spain

Liight is a mobile application that encourages people to be more sustainable in their daily lives through gamification and smart city systems.

Through IoT technology and the use of social networks, Liight proposes to motivate citizens to take action and acquire sustainable habits such as the use of public transport, cycling or recycling. Currently the app is available on the Play Store (Android devices) and is working in all the metropolitan area of the community of Madrid (+10 cities).
